GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro have become extremely popular as a weight loss aid in recent years. But not everyone is eligible for these treatments just like that. In this blog, we'll explain when you're eligible for GLP-1 medication — and what to expect.
What exactly is GLP-1 medication?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone produced by the body that regulates your appetite. GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone and ensure that you:
- Experience less hunger
- Eat slower and get full faster
- Better regulates your blood sugar levels
These drugs are originally used for type 2 diabetes, but have also been found to be effective for weight loss.
When do you qualify?
In the Netherlands, GLP-1 medication is prescribed for overweight or obese people, under certain conditions.
You are generally eligible if you:
✅ Have a BMI of:
- ≥ 30 (obesity), or
- ≥ 27 with an additional health risk (such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, insulin resistance)
✅ Have already made several attempts to lose weight
For example, with diets, coaching or exercise — but without permanent results.
✅ Motivated to change your lifestyle
GLP-1 is not a “quick fix”. It works best in combination with healthy food, exercise and coaching.
✅ Do not have any medical contraindications
Such as certain stomach or bowel disorders, pancreatitis, or pregnancy. A doctor will assess whether it is safe for you.
Is GLP-1 reimbursed?
In some cases (for example, type 2 diabetes), the medication is reimbursed by the health insurer. When used for weight loss without diabetes, reimbursement is currently available not standard in the Netherlands. Only the medicine Saxenda is currently reimbursed for the treatment of adults without type 2 diabetes mellitus with an extremely increased weight-related health risk, who are not (yet) eligible for metabolic surgery and who have participated in a GLI program recognized by the RIVM for at least 1 year and thus achieved insufficient weight loss. Goodweigh offers GLP-1 treatments as self-paying care.
