What are the most common side effects with Ozempic?
Most Ozempic users experience mild and temporary side effects, especially in the first weeks of use. According to Zorginstituut Nederland, gastrointestinal complaints are the most common in particular. This is because Ozempic slows stomach emptying and thus causes a change in your digestive hormones.
The most common side effects include:
- Nausea or feeling full
- Abdominal pain or upset stomach
- Constipation (constipation) or diarrhea
- Headaches
- Fatigue
These symptoms usually disappear on their own as soon as your body gets used to the treatment. For all side effects, please refer to the leaflet.
Gastrointestinal complaints are slightly more common in people with reduced kidney function. That is why it is extra important to discuss complaints properly with your Goodweigh doctor. At Goodweigh, we ask you to complete a short assessment every 4 weeks to share with your doctor.
Fortunately, most side effects are temporary and easy to manage. Our medical team monitors your progress and provides advice on how to reduce any symptoms so that you can continue with your treatment safely and comfortably.
Are there any rare or serious side effects?
Very rare but more serious side effects may occur, such as:
- Serious gastrointestinal complaints such as stomach inflammation
- Pancreatic inflammation (pancreatitis) identified by severe abdominal pain that radiates to the back
- Hypersensitivity reactions or allergies with swelling of the face, lips, or throat (angioedema)
Research shows that these side effects only occur in a small percentage (0.01-0.1%) of users. In case of persistent abdominal pain, vomiting or swelling, it is important to contact a doctor immediately. At Goodweigh, you will be supported by our medical team.
When do side effects usually occur?
Most symptoms occur in the first weeks after the start or dose increase. This is because your body has to adapt to the medicine. For most people, the symptoms disappear on their own as soon as the body gets used to the dose.
What can you do yourself in case of mild symptoms?
There are several ways to alleviate mild side effects:
- Eat slowly and eat smaller portions. Large meals can intensify nausea
- Opt for easily digestible foods. Think soup, crackers or yoghurt.
- Stay hydrated. Drink small sips of water regularly.
- Schedule your injection at a fixed time. This helps your body get used to the rhythm.
- Alternate the injection site. To prevent possible skin irritation at the injection site.
- Avoid high-fat or high-sugar meals. These can make stomach problems worse.
When to contact a doctor
Always contact a doctor or Goodweigh's medical guidance if you:
- Have severe or persistent abdominal pain
- Vomiting strongly or experiencing dehydration symptoms
- Notices jaundice (yellow skin or eyes) or dark urine
- Experience swelling or difficulty breathing after an injection
Goodweigh makes this easy: via our online platform, you can consult with a doctor quickly and securely, without waiting time or hospital visits. In case of an emergency, you should of course always call 112.
Are the side effects of Ozempic permanent?
In most cases, the side effects are temporary and reversible. Once your body gets used to Ozempic, the symptoms usually disappear on their own. Serious or permanent side effects are very rare and are always carefully monitored. Side effects such as headache and nausea therefore disappear when the medicine wears off and become milder over time anyway.
How does Goodweigh help deal with side effects?
At Goodweigh, we combine medication with personal medical guidance and lifestyle coaching. Our doctors monitor your progress online, adjust the dose if necessary, and provide advice on nutrition, exercise and lifestyle. Together, we will ensure that you continue to feel good throughout the entire process. We therefore recommend that you schedule an appointment with one of our lifestyle coaches immediately after you start.
