Ozempic is used via an injection pen. That may sound exciting, but in practice, it is easy and quick to learn.

Where do you administer Ozempic in the body?
Ozempic is given with a subcutaneous injection, which means right under the skin. The most suitable places are:

  • the belly (at least two centimeters from the navel)
  • upper leg (front or side)
  • or upper arm (on the outside)

It is important to alternate the puncture site to prevent skin irritation. You don't have to take the injection deep: the medicine works through the fat layer under your skin, where the active substance is slowly absorbed. When you start a treatment at Goodweigh we will send a brochure with a link to an instructional video. This way, you can always be sure that you are making the injection correctly.

How often should you inject?

Ozempic is administered once a week, always on the same day of the week. This fixed rhythm ensures that the amount of active substance (semaglutide) in your body remains stable.
This is because the drug has a long duration of action. It stays active for about one week, so weekly injections are sufficient.

What do you need for an injection?

For each injection, you need the following:

  • The Ozempic pen (with the correct dose)
  • A new, sterile needle
  • Optionally, an alcohol wipe to clean the skin

Always check the pen before use: the liquid must be clear and colourless. Store the pen in the refrigerator, but let it reach room temperature before use for more comfort while injecting. Injecting the pen is easy and you don't have to stay home. Feel free to take the pen with you on a trip so that you can still make the injection on your regular day.

Step-by-step: how to administer Ozempic

  1. Wash your hands and make sure your pen is ready to use.
  2. Place a new needle on the pen and remove the cap.
  3. Set the correct dose according to the schedule provided by the doctor or coach.
  4. Choose a puncture site: stomach, upper thigh, or upper arm.
  5. Cleanse the skin with an alcohol wipe (optional).
  6. Insert the needle under the skin at a 90-degree right angle and press the injection button slowly.
  7. Wait 6 seconds after pressing to ensure that all liquid has been administered.
  8. Remove the needle, dispose of it safely, and put the cap back on the pen.

The first few times, it can be nice to do this under supervision, or with the online instruction from Goodweigh at hand.

Does it hurt to inject yourself?

Ozempic's needle is very thin and short, so most people barely feel the injection. Sometimes you may experience a slight pressure or prick, but this is usually over quickly. Tip: inject when you are relaxed and do not put too much tension on the skin. It may be exciting the first time, but after 1-2 times, everyone will go flawlessly and without pain.

What if you forget an injection?

If you forget to give the injection, the advice is to do this as soon as possible as long as it is within 5 days of your normal injection day.

Has it been longer than 5 days? Then skip the dose and continue with your regular injection day the following week. We recommend that you schedule a fixed time in your agenda in the first few weeks. This way, you avoid missing a dose and having to skip it. If you have any questions, we are of course always available to help you find out what you can do best in your situation.
