No, Ozempic and Wegovy are not exactly the same, although they both contain the active substance semaglutide. They belong to the same group of medicines, the so-called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which, among other things, inhibit appetite and lower blood sugar levels. In practice, both medications prescribed by doctors to overweight people, although that happens with Ozempic off-label, so outside the official indication.
The most important difference lies in the purpose for which they were developed. Ozempic was originally intended for people with type 2 diabetes and is also reimbursed for that indication in the Netherlands, provided you meet the conditions. Wegovy has been specially developed for people with obesity or severe overweight, without having to be diabetic.
In addition, the dosing. Wegovy contains a higher amount of semaglutide than Ozempic, so the effect on weight loss is usually stronger.
Both drugs are manufactured by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. Although the name and effect are similar, they therefore differ in application and dosage.
